  • New ATM Technology Could Help Find a Solution for Skimming

    By 3VR Team   |   Tuesday Jan 31, 2012

Many banks are making it easier and easier to conduct most banking business at the ATM, helping customers avoid waiting in lines at the counter to complete simple transactions like a deposits and withdrawals. However, incidents of ATM skimming, where thieves place external devices on ATM to steal credit card information, are growing.

The FBI recently told Wall Street Journal that more money is now stolen through data breaches at banks than in actual bank robberies. If this is the case, what can be done to keep customer’s credit card information safe and difficult to access? Diebold Inc.’s solution is to leave credit cards behind completely and transition payment information to an application people can access on their mobile phones.

Superbowl XLVI logoOn February 5th this year, thousands of fans will be flocking to the XLVI Super Bowl at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis where the Giants will face the Patriots. What many fans don’t know, and may not even notice during the festivities, is that more than 80 security cameras will be present throughout downtown Indianapolis for the event, as well as four helicopters, numerous police officers with hand-held video devices, a special truck designed to scan for explosive, biological or radioactive threats and more than 100 undercover city and state police officers.

  • Shoppers More Open to Giving Out Personal Info

    3VR Team's picture
    By 3VR Team   |   Tuesday Jan 24, 2012

With the growing amount of discussion on video analytics being used in retail settings to increase insight into customer behavior, a recent survey has shown that shoppers don’t necessarily mind sharing information if the ultimate gain is a better, more tailored shopping experience for them.

A survey conducted recently by IBM revealed that shoppers are in fact willing to give personal information to retailers. More than 28,000 people in 15 countries were surveyed and showed that more personalized marketing and an efficient shopping experience were easy tradeoffs for giving up a little personal information.

  • What’s Your Solution to Stop Online Piracy?

    3VR Team's picture
    By 3VR Team   |   Thursday Jan 19, 2012

If you tried to access Wikipedia yesterday, or many other websites, you may have come across a “dark” website that was participating in the widespread internet blackout - a protest of the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), a bill that is being put to vote in Congress.

The bill is designed to stop piracy by giving Congress the ability to deny access to previously out-of-reach, foreign websites. The Justice Department would have the decisive power to keep pirate sites from receiving U.S. visitors and funding. This would be done by blocking access to the website to users or by requiring search engines, like Google, to disable the links to the site.

  • 4 Questions for IT to Ask When Evaluating a Video Surveillance Solution

    3vr documents

    1) Does the solution have bandwidth throttling?
A video surveillance solution that doesn’t adapt well to your network’s constraints can interfere with other important network traffic.

    2) Does the solution have distributed architecture?
There are pros and cons for both centralized and distributed systems. A centralized system greatly impacts bandwidth by streaming all data across the whole network. A distributed system employs appliances at the edge of the network to ensure that only important data and video is allowed to travel over the network.

In the past few months we have discussed the topic of credit card skimming quite frequently. Last month we got Up Close & Personal with Organized Skimming Attacks, in November we listed the 5 Best Practices for Banks & Credit Unions to Halt Skimming, and in September we covered how the FBI is now getting involved in the FBI Tackles ATM Skimming & Cybercrimes.

    Blogs

In no particular order, here are four must-read security blogs that take an independent angle to current industry information, trends and updates.

Salted Hash – A go-to for IT security news and analysis, authored by Bill Brenner, managing editor of CSOonline and CSO magazine. Brenner takes an almost zealous investigative approach to shedding light on anything from Android hackers to identity theft and more.

  • Shoplifting: Post 2011

    3VR Team's picture
    By 3VR Team   |   Thursday Jan 5, 2012

The 2011 Global Theft Barometer predicted there would be a rise in shoplifting during the four weeks prior to Christmas, up 6% from 2010 and estimating a $1.84 billion in merchandise losses. The majority of merchandise loss is from theft; a store’s customers steal 36% and employees contribute to a surprising 44% of the stolen goods.

The growth of theft around the holiday season has a lot to do with the increase in customer traffic which makes it difficult for employees to keep track of who and what is coming and going. Another factor is that winter coats, bulky sweaters and customers carrying extra shopping bags create additional opportunities to hide stolen items.

What are some changes that can be made to reduce shrinkage in 2012?

  • LAPD Could Use Some Improvements in Their Citywide Surveillance Network

    By 3VR Team   |   Tuesday Jan 3, 2012

LAPD SealYou may be familiar with the age-old adage, “Tools are only as good as the hands that wield them,” and in many cases this is found to be true. However, the current issues that the Los Angeles Police Department has been experiencing with their city-wide surveillance cameras aren’t originating from lack of dedication, hard work or care – but rather a missing link in what could be a valuable crime-fighting tool.
