    fight shoplifting

Last night, as I was checking out at my local grocery store, I noticed the gentleman standing at the next cashier. His SF Giants cap initially drew my attention, but then I noticed the case of beer sitting on the bottom shelf of his shopping cart. Soon enough, he left the store without paying.

Maybe it was an honest mistake. He just forgot, and once he got to his car and saw the beer, he would head back in to pay. Or, he would decide that the hassle of going back in wasn’t worth it, throw the beer in his trunk, and go on with his day.

BUT what if this was an ongoing scam?

    ATM Skimming anti-fraud tactics

In my 18 years as a law enforcement officer of the Greenwich Connecticut Police Department and the Connecticut Financial Crimes Task Force, I've witnessed and dealt with my fair share of ATM skimming crooks. ATM fraud is one of the banking industry’s fastest growing crimes, with high-tech criminals using increasingly sophisticated methods to skim money from teller machines.

How can financial institutions put a stop to ATM fraud? I lecture frequently to law enforcement and the private sector, and want to share with you a few fraud prevention tips through a webinar next week. Here's a bonus tip for 3VR blog readers:

    Military Friendly Companies

Most all of us have family and friends who have served in our armed services. This month our country salutes our military personnel, past and present, honoring our armed service veterans since WWI hostilities were formally ended during the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918. What stories have they shared with you about that time in their life?

    We Salute Military-Friendly Companies

Today, we honor and support companies who are military friendly: those who recruit a high percentage of employees with prior military service and make efforts to retain those in the National Guard and Reserve Services. One of our esteemed customers, 24-Hour Fitness, has been named one of Top 100 "Military Friendly" companies.

    Tyco Financial Security Symposium

A friend of mine recently had her credit card stolen and $800 withdrawn from her account via an ATM in Arizona. A resident of San Francisco, she noticed that her card was gone within 24 hours and learned about the withdrawal when she went to cancel it. Her story is frighteningly common.

Financial fraud, especially credit card theft, is on the rise and many of us feel strongly about the need for better, more advanced security controls. Here, I will highlight new technologies that not only improve financial security but also enable banks and financial institutions to mine data for valuable business intelligence.

The following are three big trends emerging in the financial security landscape:

What is it about finding an easier way to do something that makes us happier?

I have fond memories of our first DVR: recording favorite shows while we were out and then fast forwarding through the commercials when we watched them.

Or how happy I was putting my first debit card to use: no more having to get cash from the bank or constantly carrying around a checkbook. Remember first being able take pictures with your cell phone and send them to people without having to develop film? It was instantly life-changing.

By Brian Lane   |   Wednesday Nov 7, 2012

This month, we are kicking off a new video series named QuickClips to demonstrate specific features and functionality of 3VR’s video security products. Each video focuses on a specific feature or function in 3 minutes or less.

This first QuickClip focuses on 3VR’s Forensic Search feature using Motion in Region. The video was created to demonstrate how to use this feature and the benefits of Forensic Search when trying to find a suspect, versus the common method of fast forwarding and rewinding through video.

    ASIS Puget Sound 2012

Everyone knows it’s a challenge to get IT and Physical Security working together as a unit. Different technologies, different budgets, and presumed different purposes (although not so different when you think about it).

If you are in Seattle tomorrow, be sure to check out the keynote seminar “Combining IT and Physical security into one effective organization” by Tim McCreight, Chief Information Officer for the Government of Alberta, at ASIS Puget Sound’s 5th Annual Technology Expo. The presentation will address how to get these two important groups in your organization to get along.

    Hurricane Sandy Red Cross

We were disappointed to hear about the postponement of ISC East, which was scheduled for Oct. 30-31, due to Hurricane Sandy. While we wait for an update on the new conference date and location, we thought we’d share a few uplifting examples of Bay Area-based businesses - according to a San Francisco Chronicle article - providing support to the areas affected.
