  • How 3VR Can Come to the NFL's Rescue

    Ankur Garg's picture

    Colin Kaepernick 49ers

Our beloved San Francisco 49ers traveled to the East coast, overcame a 17-point deficit against the Atlanta Falcons, and secured a spot in Superbowl XLVII! I just love football; I’ve been to countless NFL games and I’ve had season tickets for my alma mater (Cal Golden Bears of UC Berkeley) for 10 years. Here in the U.S., professional football becomes more popular each year. Costs for TV commercials during games are at an all-time high, player salaries are ridiculous, and the former head coach for Cal was listed as the highest paid state employee in California. But actual game attendance is decreasing. WHY? And can 3VR come to the rescue?

    age of connectivity

3VR Executive Series Al Shipp An Open World

As another year goes by, I find myself reflecting on the past year while beginning to anticipate what lies ahead this coming year. Throughout my career in technology, I’ve had amazing opportunities to work around some incredible people such as the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs and witnessed how innovation can transform businesses and economies. As an engineer, I have always been fascinated by how a simple idea can grow to change people’s lives. Here in Silicon Valley, the notion of ideas changing the world is part of the fabric and why I live here.

Early in my career, I joined IBM – this was at a time when the IBM Personal Computer had just been announced and was flourishing. We weren’t the first company to build a personal computer, but IBM helped PCs become mainstream. The company, founded in 1911, populated homes and offices throughout the world with its little beige boxes, running on what was then the most powerful 16-bit Intel processor and MS-DOS. I was part of the team that designed the first group of IBM PC printers and it was a rare opportunity for me to manage product development from design to putting the product into the market. It was never just about the bottom line or one-upping competitors. It was, to me, about seeing an idea from concept to design to reality. When you see your products being used by thousands of people, you get a sense of deep satisfaction of having been a part of that creative process of innovation impacting our culture and society.

  • 3VR is Hiring! Come Join the Team: Lead Web/Mobile Developer

    3VR Team's picture
    By 3VR Team   |   Tuesday Jan 29, 2013

Calling all developers: 3VR is hiring! We're looking for a lead web/mobile developer to join us here at our headquarters in San Francisco, CA. See below for all the details:

    LEAD WEB/MOBILE DEVELOPER

We're looking for a great developer who has the ability to lead other team members and enable them to deliver more than they thought they could.

3VR is changing the world of video infrastructure by building a platform that supports tens of thousands of cameras within Global 1000 enterprises.  With sophisticated analytics, and the ability to correlate video from multiple camera types with metadata from an array of enterprise sources — including ATM, point-of-sale (POS), teller and access control systems — 3VR extracts rich, targeted, and actionable “visual intelligence” from existing video. Check out an overview of our latest software release here: http://vimeo.com/29204653.

    SCDigest Video Review

You know that ‘happy accident’ or ‘pleasant surprise’ when you accidentally find something good or useful for another purpose while not specifically searching for it? Such as discovering you could brush your teeth with baking soda if you ran out of toothpaste. Or learning you could wrap a wet paint brush in plastic wrap, without cleaning it first, until you were ready to use it again. Maybe that was how the cellular network providers felt when they discovered customers using their infrastructure more for data than voice.

    mobile payments

There are two fast emerging technologies that will affect retail sales and surveillance:
    1) Card reading devices that work inside a retail establishment that are essentially replacing “cash registers."
    2) Mobile payment acceptance using devices attached to smart phones.

By An Mai   |   Thursday Jan 17, 2013

This year’s NRF BIG Show delivered several memorable speakers and events. From Kofi Annan’s keynote on international economic prosperity to the Coca-Cola panel that pointed out how security cameras can inspire “happiness,” the 3VR team was honored and glad to be able to take part in such an exciting event. Everyone at the NYC event was abuzz about a few hot topics, namely the urgency of omni-channel retailing and a how technology has changed the shopper experience. There was a general consensus that retailers need go back to the drawing board in 2013.

  • Smile! Security Cameras = Happiness? More from NRF's BIG Show

    An Mai's picture
By An Mai   |   Tuesday Jan 15, 2013

Retail’s BIG Show is now in full swing and the numerous events are great opportunities to learn from industry professionals. Our ears perked up during Sunday’s keynote presentation "Coca-Cola Opens Happiness for Consumers and Retailers" when Alison Lewis, SVP of Marketing for Coca-Cola North America, asked what comes to mind when we see video surveillance cameras in a store. She made a good point that these cameras remind people of bad guys—thieves and fraudsters. But really, video surveillance can serve as much more than just a loss prevention measure; it also captures moments that showcase the goodness in people. Watch the video above to see how people can be awesome, funny, silly, and heroic, even when they think no one's watching.

    SP&T News

With that in mind, let's shift gears toward other "good" things that video surveillance offers. SP&T News recently featured 3VR’s CMO Joe Boissy in an article about the fall and rise of video analytics in the last decade. Video analytics were touted as a security industry game-changer; however, all the hype was met with disappointment as technology struggled to support the grand promises video analytics made.

As Joe points out, "The false start of video analytics 5 to 10 years ago left a bad taste in many security professionals’ mouths." Fortunately, technology has caught up and is continually improving, thus being able to finally enact major changes to the security industry.

NRF Big Show 2013 3VR coffee break

Were you at retail’s BIGGEST party last night? The NRF organizers sure know how to throw a spectacular event, pulling out all the stops for Retail’s BIG Show 2013. Sunday night’s opening night reception at the Marriott Marquis was a great opportunity for exhibitors and attendees alike to kick back, relax and make new connections.

If you were at the NYC event yesterday, you may have been one of the 10,000 people holding a 3VR coffee cup. We are extremely excited at the success of the 3VR-sponsored coffee breaks and hope you enjoyed a cup of Joe on us!

This morning got off to a fantastic start with an inspiring keynote from former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan, who encouraged retailers to not just produce for the middle and upper classes, but also look for opportunities in the Third World, which is “waiting for retail.”

The 3VR crew – including CEO Al Shipp, CMO Joe Boissy and Engineering VP Masa Karahashi – is looking forward to the power-packed BIG Show agenda in NYC this week, and interacting with attendees at our booth (C656). We thought we’d put together a list of useful resources to help you navigate your way around the event.

    Sales Mountain

    Lesson #1: Study the mountain

When you plan to successfully summit a new sales peak every month and failure is not an option because you have obligations, you better study the mountain’s terrain before you begin your ascent! This analogy certainly rings true to those of us that make our living selling technology solutions to new prospects and customers.

Intelligent Store Series Top 10 Factors that Will Drive Higher In-Store Conversions in 2013

This year, my Christmas shopping experience went pretty smoothly except for one hiccup. I wanted to find a specific novel for someone, so I went to a major retailer’s website to check the price and see which store location would have it in stock. About a week before Christmas, I went to the location and saw that the price listed in-store was marked about 30% higher than what I had seen on the website.
